What are your rituals or traditions for starting off a new year?

My family and I always go to a shinto shrine in a morning of Gantan (Jan. 1). Before we go we have "ozouni" and "osechi", both special meals for a new year. We go to the same shrine every year, which is about 10-15 min. away from our place by car. We wish a good year at the shrine and buy a "hamaya" (an arrow that spears the evil) while leaving the old one at the shrine. Then my brother and I draw fortune slips and see what our new year will be like.

We come home, find a pile of "nengajo" (New Year's card) in our mailbox and sort them. My parents spend some time reading them. We don't eat lunch. We never do on gantan. If we get hungry we just grab some snack.

After that we just do whatever we feel like doing. Watch a soccer game on TV, watch movies on DVDs we rented, or just relax and do nothing. My parents often print more new year's cards to reply to those whom they haven't sent their cards to.

When I was a kid we used to get together with relatives and celebrate together but we no longer do it. I used to like playing with my cousins but I'm glad we don't do it anymore. Who likes a huge family gathering anyway? I don't.

This year I'm in Canada and did not get to do all these. Spending a new year outside Japan really sucks. I miss ozouni and going to the shrine. I want to draw a fortune slip and see what it says.

お雑煮とお節を食べて、初詣へ。毎年同じ神社に行く。

お参りして、破魔矢買って、私と弟はおみくじを引く。いつも同じおみくじで、お守り付き。お守りは２人とも財布に入れる。前の年のお守りは前の年の破魔矢と一緒におはらいしてもらう。

で、家に戻って年賀状を仕分け。私に送る人はいないので、あまり関係なし。ここ最近は、家に戻る前にミスドの福袋を買ったりする。

家に戻ってからはダラダラ。サッカー観たり、年末に借りておいたDVD観たり、それぞれ好きな事をする。ドーナッツとコーヒーをおやつに。

昔は親戚で集まって云々とかあったんだけど、そういうことももうない。でも面倒だから家族だけで過ごすのが一番。

日本のお正月、かなり好きだ。今年はこっちにいるので経験できなくて、初詣もおみくじもお雑煮もなくて寂しい。そのうえとてもしつこい風邪を引いているし。

なんにせよ、明けましておめでとうございます。

• Being able to eat whenever I'm hungry
• Access to health care
• Living in relatively peaceful countries (Canada & Japan)

I'm grateful for all these when I think about them but I often take them for granted.

Coming to Canada.

I left my home in Japan when I was 15 and I have never regretted it. I'm not saying I don't like Japan. I LOVE my country and it will always be my home but everything - both good and bad things - I've experienced since I came here are just so special and really helped me to mature. I'm grateful of my parents who've always been supportive of me (though they first opposed me to go to Canada).

カナダに来た事。

青春時代を異国で暮らした事で経験できなかった事もあるだろうけど、これっぽっちも後悔してない。こっちに来てからの、いい事もわるい事も全てが自分にとっていい経験になったと思っている。

最初反対していたのに、こっそり応援してくれている両親には感謝してもしきれません。

でも日本は大好きだし、日本程いい国なんてないという気持ちは変わらないのだ。
